Wednesday morning I left the rest area and made it to Highway 101 that runs the length of the Pacific Coast in the US. I took a lovely walk at Ecola State Park overlooking Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock, then made way down to Pacific City (familiar to fans of the 1985 film "The Goonies"). I ended up camping for a couple of nights just north of there next to the Sand Lake sand dunes.
